You might also want to try James Gordley's new book on "Foundations of Private Law" (also OUP). I've requested but have not yet received a review copy, so I can't say anything about it except that it probably won't be as pithy as Ibbetson's book.

David Ibbetson's OUP book on the history of the English law of obligations might be a good place to start.
