As a dog-loving contract lawyer I hesitate to intervene but it is Sunday evening - at least in Sydney.
In the case of Michael's father might there not be a principle of excessive force?
In respect of short and long cases there are two oldies which are worth looking and are both still regularly cited.
Re Thames (Dagenham) Dock - Two Judgments in a single page.
Attwood v Small - argued for 48 days before the House of Lords and with judgments of appropriate length. Hard to measure because English Report pages are very large.
I have seen a 20th century House of Lords case where the appeal was dismissed after hearing argument but without judgments.
