Assistant Professor in the Department of Law

Applications are invited for appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Law, tenable from September 1, 2004 or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will initially be made on a three-year fixed term basis, with the possibility of renewal.

The Department of Law plays a leading role in legal education in Hong Kong and Asia, through its undergraduate programme, postgraduate research programmes, and various taught postgraduate programmes covering a range of legal subject areas. It seeks to maintain its position as a leading research and teaching institution in corporate and financial law, constitutional law, human rights law and PRC commercial law. It is the largest and oldest law teaching institution in Hong Kong, currently consisting of 33 teaching members, and an undergraduate and postgraduate student body of approximately 650 students. Applicants should possess a good Bachelor's degree in Law from a common law jurisdiction and a postgraduate qualification in the legal field. A track record in conducting legal research, as well as teaching experience, is also expected. The appointee should be able to teach at the undergraduate level in at least two of the basic common law subjects (e.g. contract, tort, equity and trust, personal and real property, legal skills and writing).

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.

At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15.5% of gross income. The appointment carries leave, and medical and dental benefits. The provision of housing benefits (where applicable) is subject to review.
